It seems like an irony that I am writing something today because there actually is nothing special or exciting to write about. Well, I don’t deny it that only when something extra-ordinary catches my attention, or when I have a new experience of something, or when I think of some memorable event that brings to mind some unforgotten memories, that I am prodded to write something on my journal. Otherwise, nothing excites me to write anything. Today is one of those days that I couldn’t think of anything exciting to write about.
But here is the irony of my senseless imagination. Just when I started writing this article, a black guy came knocking into the Rectory door asking for me. Our secretary came into my office and told me that the guy seemed to know me because he mentioned my name, and he wanted to see me badly. Well, I stopped what I was doing, got up from my desk, and went out from my office to see who this person was. The guy was smiling when he saw me and he said hello and greeted me like he had been a long acquaintance. I was a bit surprised when I saw him because I’ve never seen or met the guy before in my life. But, anyway, out of courtesy, I let him in and we sat down in the small sitting room adjacent to our offices. Immediately when seated, he began telling me why he was there to see me. He said that he was a male nurse and is currently working at the University hospital in New Jersey. That he was just hired at his job last Monday. Then he mentioned that he is from our parish, and he is currently residing at an apartment near our Church. The bottom line is, he wanted to ask for some money because he claimed that he had no money whatsoever at the moment. I almost wanted to believe him at first because he looked like a nice guy. At the same time, he made me looked so stupid as if I didn’t know anything. Here was a guy telling me that he had no money whatsoever, and yet told me that he was a nurse currently working at the University hospital. By the way, he also mentioned that he was working as part time in a restaurant. And as I looked at his appearance, he could not be a homeless man because he was dressed nicely. He was wearing a nice sunglass, a number of gold rings in his fingers, and a wireless microphone in his ear. Whom was he kidding? He thought maybe that I would just buy his story easily. I said to myself that this guy could be a swindler because he could talk nicely. But his words were simply inconsistent with his actions. Well, obviously, there are some people like this guy who are not too smart, to say the least. They are caught up easily by their own doing. Oh well, I just excused myself and left.
As I went back to my office, I could not help myself but smile. I said to myself that God indeed sometimes plays some surprises in our lives. Who could ever imagine that just when I was thinking of nothing exciting to write, a sudden surprise such as this one comes along. Oh well, an ordinary day such as today is not so ordinary after all.
